Inspiring Writing Toolkit:
A Christmas Carol

Inspire writing in the classroom with our toolkit of creative projects for Reception to Year 6, made by professional theatre makers

With our digital toolkit you can bring all the expertise of professional theatre into your classroom through original creative projects, created by theatre-makers and curated for delivery in your classroom. Designed to accompany our Christmas drama workshop based on A Christmas Carol, the activities in the pack help you to explore Charles Dickens’ story with your class.

The toolkit will enhance, extend and expand on the impact of our work by providing a series of theatrical activities and creative classroom projects for you to use in school. Each activity includes a PowerPoint, Teacher Guide and Worksheet differentiated for KS1 and KS2, and draws on a different theatrical element to provide a springboard for creative and descriptive writing in the classroom.

Each of the projects within the pack is drawn from one of 5 theatrical departments that form the creation of a piece of theatre. Each project has been made to inspire creative and descriptive writing:
  • The Rehearsal Room
  • The Director
  • The Sound Department
  • The Design Studio
  • The Writing Room

  • Collaborate as a class and in smaller groups through high quality creative projects.
  • Create scenes, characters and arts projects using the expertise of professional theatre makers.
  • Learn about different elements of theatre, and how different types of creativity combine to create a shared imaginative experience.
  • Explore the characters, story and Victorian setting of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
  • Write in an inspired, creative and collaborative way using theatre-inspired techniques designed to make writing fun, accessible and exciting.

Through class and group work, the collaborative activities draw on different sides of the children's creativity and imagination, enabling them to see key moments from A Christmas Carol in a new way. From putting the text up on its feet, creating new scenes, exploring songs, or taking part in a design project, the story will take on new life and new meaning. Through the fusion of different theatrical elements, students will be excited and engaged, which will in turn lead to more imaginative, creative and inspired writing.
